Gertrude W. Foster

Gertrude W. (Weaver) Foster, 98, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2022, surrounded by family.

Trudy was born on April 19, 1924, in Irwin, PA. She and her family relocated to Louisville, KY, and then to Springfield where her father began working for Westinghouse Electric. She graduated from Indiana University.

Trudy worked as a buyer for Forbes & Wallace Department Store in Springfield, until leaving to raise her family with husband, Donald E. Foster. She returned to work as a teacher’s aide for the Springfield School Department, working at White Street School for over 20 years until retiring in 1994.

Trudy was a long-time member of Faith United Church in Springfield, where she and Don were married in 1948. Trudy actively served on the Women’s Guild and on many church committees, helping with numerous church dinners, rummage sales, coffee hours and other church activities.

Trudy especially loved to tell how Don, a pilot, flew her upside down in his airplane when they were dating, and she didn’t get sick. That, as the story goes, is how he knew she was “the one.”

Along with her beloved husband, Trudy was predeceased by her parents James R. & Bessie (Frye) Weaver, and her brothers James & Jack Weaver. She leaves her children, Don Foster Jr., Debra Kirchherr, and Tracie Trudeau & husband David, sister, Elaine Wayland, granddaughters Kara Kirchherr & husband Troy Brin, and Kellyn Kirchherr, step-grandson, Kyle Trudeau & wife Lauren, great-grandchildren, Kaylie, Olivia, Hadley, Addison, Taylin & Emerson.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 11:30 a.m. at Foster Memorial Church, 1791 Wilbraham Road in Springfield. Trudy will once again join Don at the MA Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in a private service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Museums or Foster Memorial Church.
