Irene A. Pepe

Updated: Sep 1, 2020

Irene Ann (McCarthy) Pepe, 79, passed away peacefully at home, on August 28, 2020, surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Springfield, she was the daughter of the late Edward G. & Anna (Garelli) McCarthy, Sr.

After graduating from the High School of Commerce, Irene went on to a 30-year career as a Laboratory Technician at Baystate Medical Center.

She married the love of her life, James G. Pepe, Sr. in 1959, spending 48 wonderful years together, before his passing in 2008.

Irene was a loving, caring, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She spent her free time between her two passions, family & gambling. Just like any time spent with her family, both a simple turtle race at Our Lady of the Lake Church, or all the glitz & glamour of a casino, would invoke the same mile wide smile.

Irene is survived by her sons, James G. Pepe, Jr. (Kelly Cote) & Dr. Michael A. Pepe (Andrea Duarte) both of Chicopee, beloved grandchildren, James G. Pepe, III & Samantha I. Pepe, brother, James McCarthy (Mary) of CT, sister, Maude Stanfield of CT, and many nieces, nephews & cousins.

Sadly, she was also predeceased by her son, Stephen, grandson, Matthew, and brothers, Edward, Jr. & Charles.

Family and friends are invited to Irene’s funeral services, Thursday, September 3, beginning with a visiting hour from 9-10 a.m. at Tazzini Funeral Home, 22 Locust St. in Springfield; followed by her Liturgy of Christian Burial, 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut St., Springfield, MA  01104. Burial will follow at Springfield Street Cemetery in Feeding Hills. Masks & social distancing required at all.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Dakin Humane Society, 171 Union St., Springfield, MA 01105.
